The work offered depicts the enthroned Madonna with Child flanked by Saints Gotthard and Maurice. In the pointed gable is a representation of the resurrection of Christ with the empty grave and the sleeping soldiers. This is all enclosed by a lovely carved and gilded frame with a candelabra motif and pilaster strips at the sides terminated by carved capitals. The representation of Saints Gotthard and Maurice, who can be identified from the inscriptions, is interesting and unique. Maurice is also recognisable from his armour. He was the commander of the Theban Legion and suffered his martyrdom during the decimation. St. Gotthard of Hildesheim was the founder of the Mauritius Foundation in Hildesheim. The presence of both of these saints, who were venerated particularly in the Savoye region, and certain stylistic elements indicate that the work was produced in Piedmont and that it can be dated to the turn of the 15th to 16th centuries.

Il dipinto, su tavola, raffigura la Madonna in trono con il Bambino affiancata dai Santi Gottardo e Maurizio; nella cuspide è raffigurata la Risurrezione di Cristo con il sepolcro vuoto e i soldati addormentati. Il tutto racchiuso da una bella cornice intagliata e dorata, con ai lati motivi a candelabro su lesene, terminate in alto da capitelli intagliati. Interessante e particolare la scelta del Santi Gottardo e Maurizio, identificati dalle iscrizioni che presentano una lectio particolare. San Maurizio è comunque riconoscibile dall’armatura, essendo stato comandante della legione di Tebe che venne martirizzata durante la decima persecuzione. San Gottardo di Hildesheim era invece figlio di un vassallo del capitolo di San Maurizio. Lungo il basamento del trono della Vergine corre un’iscrizione di cui è possibile decifrare solo il nome di battesimo dell’autore ‘Giovanni Antonio da Pa..’ Gli elementi stilistici dell’opera e la presenza dei santi Gottardo e Maurizio, il culto dei quali era particolarmente vivo nei territori sabaudi, consentono di riferire l’opera all’area Piedmontese, con una datazione a cavallo tra XV e XVI secolo.
